Matt Catalano, the Stoughton Native, graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in 1985 where he played goalie for three years for Norwood Hockey Legend Don Wheeler.

After graduation he did a PG year at New Prep in Cambridge, and played goal for the South Shore Braves, one of the first junior teams in the area.

In the fall of 1986 he enrolled at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, about an hour south of Buffalo. He played there for three years in the old ECAC West Division II, and appeared in 25 plus games, recording his first win at Hobart College in the fall of ’86.

Matt graduated from Bonaventure in 1990 and moved back to the area. In the mid 90’s he helped coach summer and spring teams at Xaverian for former Coach Mike Brennan, where he met current Xaverian Coach Dave Spinale, who was freshman coach at the time.

In 2000, Matt became goalie coach at Canton High School, along side hockey legend Don Callow, in the newly founded girls program which became an instant powerhouse going to the State Finals in 2001 and 2006.

Upon Callows retirement, Matt moved on to be goalie coach for Norwood High in the Bay State League from 2006 – 2010.

With the birth of his 4th child, Harry in 2009, and two hip replacements, he was away from hockey until he began coaching again in 2019, helping with his son Harry’s Crimson Club teams.

He has been coaching for the Express since 2021 where his son Harry plays on multiple teams.

He still resides in Stoughton with his wife Ann and their four kids, Bridget, Megan, Nora ,and Harry who now attends Xaverian.
